Remote Learning Academy

Dear Families,

Thank you for your support during our first two weeks of remote learning! Our Remote Learning Academy teachers and staff are committed to providing a positive learning experience for our remote students.

We know that the first two weeks of school, especially, a virtual school will present challenges. Two challenges we faced were technology and screen time for our students. Our technology team has been working diligently to get all our students up and running with their devices. Teachers have patiently coached students and families on how to navigate Google Classroom. Our remote learners have been working to build their stamina for synchronous learning.

We know great teaching and learning can only happen when students feel connected and part of a strong classroom community. These first two weeks were focused on setting norms and routines and building those classroom communities. The best way to accomplish this was through whole class synchronous learning throughout the day.

Our goal in the coming days and weeks is for our teachers to move toward small group and 1:1 instruction. This will occur following mini-lessons in reading, writing, and math, as well as, during flex time in the afternoons. Your teachers will share more details for their specific classrooms. This will allow for more engaging, high quality teaching and learning during those synchronous lessons. It will also give students more asynchronous time to work independently on a skill, strategy or task following a mini-lesson.

As we continue to navigate this virtual learning experience, we will continue to reflect and adjust our learning experiences to best meet the needs of our students and families.

Teachers will take attendance for all students at the start of each day and in each subject area. Logging in with camera on signifies being present. In-school attendance policies apply to remote students.

Tech Tips

Here are Some Tech Tips for our Remote Learners

  1. Power Down - Please be sure you are completely shutting down the computers each night. Closing the lid, especially on the Chromebooks, does not allow it to refresh and will eventually bog down the speed.
  2. Multiple Devices – Students should not be signed into multiple devices. If you have used a second (or third) device for your student to log in, make sure they are logged out. We know you may want to “check-in” on your student’s work from another computer. Please refrain from doing this during school hours. Being logged in on multiple devices can cause issues with Google Meet and other programs.
  3. Video Quality – We have found that pausing the video while opening other tabs, and then unpausing after it has loaded, will reduce the possibility of being “kicked off” the Google Meet.
  4. Logged into Chrome – Students should be logged into the Chrome browser to ensure all of the provided tech tools will operate correctly. This is only a concern for non-Chromebooks. If you are not sure how to check – Please view our Video How do I sign in on a non-Chromebook computer?
