The Southington Public Schools are proud to announce that Kari Peschel-Luise, an Engineering, Architecture, and Technology Education teacher at Southington High School, has been chosen as the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year. Kari will be recognized at the 2018-2019 Staff Convocation on August 27, 2018. Also, she will be recognized at a reception prior to a Board of Education meeting in September at the Municipal Center.

Mrs. Peschel-Luise has been teaching in Southington for the past five years. Mrs. Peschel-Luise had an early career as an architect both in Canada and Germany prior to moving to the United States in 2008. She was hired originally by the Southington Public Schools in October 2011 as a part time para-educator at Kennedy Middle School. She accepted a position as a full-time para-educator at Kennedy Middle School in October 2012 and was appointed to her current position in August 2013. Mrs. Peschel-Luise comes from a family of educators and believes that her family’s influence along with experiences from her personal and professional journey led her to become an educator herself.

Mrs. Peschel-Luise earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 1987 and her Master’s Degree in Environmental Design in Architecture in 1993 from the University of Calgary in Canada. She earned her Engineering Degree in Berlin, Germany. Mrs. Peschel-Luise returned to school to earn her Certificate in Teaching in May 2014. She has attended professional development sessions at Skills 21, EdAdvance, the New England Secondary Schools High School Redesign in Action Conference in 2015 & 2017, the League of Innovative Schools conference, as well as numerous Project Lead the Way professional learning opportunities.

Mrs. Peschel-Luise is an advocate and an inspiration for teaching and learning. She is part of the Project Lead the Way program, Co-chair of the Technology Advisory Committee, mentor of Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE), and previously mentored the girls’ VEX team with the First Robotics Team 195. In addition, Mrs. Peschel-Luise will Co-chair the SHS accreditation committee, a process commencing next year with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Mrs. Peschel-Luise resides in Plantsville with her husband Christopher. They have three children, Leon Peschel, Erick Luise and Niels Peschel, all graduates of Southington High School.
