Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Below you will find a collection of frequently asked questions parents often have about the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

GENERAL INFORMATION

What is PowerSchool?

PowerSchool is the student information system that Southington Public Schools uses to manage student data and information such as grades, attendance, demographics, courses, etc. PowerSchool is web-based, therefore much of this information can easily, but safely be shared with parents and students.

What is the PowerSchool Parent Portal?

The PowerSchool Parent Portal is a feature of the PowerSchool Student Information System that provides parents/guardians immediate access to grades, assignments, attendance records, and more. It is a great tool to facilitate and improve communication between home and school. You can access the parent portal at: https://ps.southingtonschools.org/public/

Do students have access to the PowerSchool Parent Portal?

PowerSchool also has a Student portal. Currently, active Southington Public Schools students in grades 6-12 have access to the student account. Students have their own credentials for their PowerSchool account.

Can I print what I see?

Yes, use the print icon at the top right of most pages. Please note that the information in PowerSchool is constantly updated and therefore what you print is likely to change as updates are made.

Do I need to logout of PowerSchool Parent Portal?

Yes, when you are finished, please logout or shutdown your computer. This way no one will be able to access your child's private information.

ACCOUNT INFORMATION

How does one get a PowerSchool Parent Portal username and password?

Your school will provide you with a letter for each of your students. The letter will provide you with the information and access codes you will need to create a PowerSchool Parent Portal account.

Can I use the same username/password for all my children in the district?

Yes! Your PowerSchool account will give you access to all students in the district. Your school will provide you with a letter for each student, with information and access codes needed to link your account to each of your children.

My husband/wife and I are separated/divorced or we want our own logins; can we get another parent username and password for our child’s account?

Yes. PowerSchool allows for multiple parent accounts to be created per child. Therefore, both parents can have their own username and password. Each can link the child to their account using the Access ID and Password obtained from your child's school.

Do I need a new username and password each year if my child is returning?

No, all login information will remain active as long as your child is an active Southington Public Schools student. Once a student leaves the district or graduates, the Parent Portal for that student is inactivated.

I have another child in a different district/magnet school that uses PowerSchool. Can I see both children under one PowerSchool account?

No. Each district uses their own student information system. Accounts are specific to the district, therefore you will need separate accounts for each.

Is my Parent Portal account the same as my child's student account?

No. Students in grades 6-12 have a student account and access PowerSchool with their own username and password.

Do students and parents see the same screens/comments?

No. The Student portal and the Parent portal of PowerSchool provide much of the same information (grades, attendance, schedules) with a few exceptions.

  • Parents have the ability to see all their children under one account, while a student will see only their information.
  • Parents also have the ability to setup email notifications to request automatic progress reports for one or more students.
  • Parents will also have access to the Student Demographics Update forms, when that process is opened annually by the district.

What do I do if I forgot my username or password?

Click on the Forgot Username or Password link on the Parent Portal login page and follow the instructions. You can also contact your child's school office to have your password reset.

What if I feel my account has been compromised?

You should immediately change your username and/or password for the PowerSchool Parent Portal. To do this:

  • Log in as usual to your Parent Portal account.
  • Go to Account Preferences in the left navigation menu.
  • To change Username, click on the little pencil next to Username and follow the instructions.

TROUBLESHOOTING

What do I do if I am unable to connect to the PowerSchool Parent Portal?

There are a few reasons you may not be connecting:

  • Is your internet service is working properly?
  • Are you using the correct username and password?
  • Are you accessing the correct website URL? (ps.southingtonschools.org) Make sure you see Southington Public Schools at the top of the page.

If you are still unable to connect, contact your child's school office during school hours for additional help.

I am getting an error "login has expired" or "cannot access site". What is wrong?

This could be an issue with your browser. Try emptying your cache and try again.

If you continue to experience this error, please call the Technology Department at 860-628-2000 ext 360.

When logging in the password is filling with dots all the way across. Why?

Most likely you have clicked YES at one point to save your password in the browser for that computer. The computer is showing you that the password was saved by filling that space. You will need to clear the password from your browser or type over the dots with your known password. Your browser may ask if you want to replace the previous password with the new password.

What do I do if I forgot my login information or I feel my account has been compromised?

Click on the Forgot Username or Password link on the Parent Portal login page or contact your child's school office to have your password reset as soon as possible.

I am getting the message "an account with that email address already exists" while creating an account. What can I do?

If you had a PowerSchool account for a student who has graduated, has left the district, or is inactive for any reason, it is possible that your account has been inactivated. Please call the Technology Department at 860-628-3200 ext 360 to have your account reactivated.

Whom should I call if I have a question?

Depending on the question, please follow the guidelines below:

  • GRADES - Contact your student's teachers. Teachers' email information is available on the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
  • ATTENDANCE - Call your school office.
  • COURSE SCHEDULES/REGISTRATION/GRADUATION PROGRESS, ETC - Call your school Guidance Office.
  • POWERSCHOOL LOGIN ISSUES - Refer to these FAQs and Tutorials for assistance. If unsuccessful, you may call our Technology Team at 860-628-3200 x360.

Why does it take a long time for PowerSchool to load in my web browser?

The speed at which your web browser can display a specific website depends on the speed of your own internet connection.

I am not getting emails from PowerSchool. Why?

There could be multiple reasons for this:

  1. Did you sign-up for Email Notifications in your Parent Portal account? Please double check the email address you entered to be sure all information is accurately input.
  2. Does your email program have a spam blocker that could be blocking the messages? If so, you will want to add the email address powerschool@southingtonschools.org to the list of “allowed” email addresses, to allow PowerSchool emails to get through.
  3. Did you check your email's BULK , JUNK or SPAM folder? Check to see if the messages are going there and choose to mark them as NOT SPAM. You will have to consult your email's help menu or manual to learn how to do this as it is different for every email provider.

I replied to the PowerSchool auto-email with a question, but have not received a response. Why?

The PowerSchool auto-generated email is created and sent by the PowerSchool server, not by an individual. The server will not reply to your email sent to that address. If you have questions about your child's progress, please direct those questions directly to your child's teacher.

When I click on the teacher’s name to email the teacher, my email program doesn’t work correctly or does not open.

Settings in you email program or browser may be preventing this. The problem is usually due to a setting on your browser, directing it to the correct email program. Since everyone’s browsers and email programs are different, your specific browser needs to be setup correctly on your computer. You may want to view the HELP area or menu for your browser, email program or contact your Internet Service Provider for further assistance.

I can't login to the parent or student portal. I put in my username and password and click submit. After clicking submit, the page reloads to a blank username and password line and does not login. Help?

PowerSchool uses "cookies" and this means your internet security is set too high, probably to the highest level of security, which blocks cookies. Depending on your browser, you will need to find the Internet Security area and turn it down a level or two so cookies are accepted. You can find out more information about this by going to your web browser's help menu and doing a search on "cookies" or "internet security."
