School nursing interventions improve student health to impact achievement and success. School nurses collaborate with administrators to promote a healthy, safe, and nurturing environment. The ability to learn is contingent on a student’s health and well being. For this reason, the primary goal of the nursing services is to maximize children’s health so that, ultimately, they can achieve their academic potential.
Overview of specific nursing services we provide include:
- Identify, assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate student and staff health concerns
- Implement health screenings that may impact student education and recommend referrals as indicated for vision, hearing and scoliosis
- Prevent transmission of disease through early detection, referral, and compliance with state- mandated immunization requirements
- Provide assessment and intervention of student illness and injury
- Manage ongoing assessment, intervention, and evaluation of students with chronic illness
- Organize, multidisciplinary collaboration with families, administrators, teachers, physicians, other integrated support services, and community resources to promote the health and welfare of students with special health needs
- Develop, initiate, and coordinate individual healthcare plans to meet students’ health needs and include appropriate staff members to implement these plans in school
- Implement educational programs and provide health teaching to foster healthy lifestyle practice
- Administer medication per authorized prescriber's' order
- Provide skilled nursing procedures (ex. blood glucose testing, gastrostomy tube feedings)
- Promote a safe and healthy school environment for students and staff
- Provide systematic, consistent, and confidential documentation of mandated health assessments, sports physicals, medication administration, and care administered in individual student school health records
- Act as school/community/health care provider liaison
- Incorporate multifaceted nursing role as educator, advocate, and primary on-site resource of student health needs

Emergency Contacts
It is essential to quickly locate parents/guardians when students are ill, injured, or an emergency arises. Parents and guardians must update information in PowerSchool Registration at the beginning of the school year and include cell phone numbers if available.
Call your school to update any address or phone numbers as they change during the school year. Remember to update any changes for your emergency names and telephone numbers as well.
PLEASE NOTE:
* Notify the school if your child will be absent and indicate the reason for absence.
* All medications must have authorization forms completed by a authorized prescriber and parent in order to be administered in school. The forms are located in the school health office or physician's office and must be renewed annually or when any medication changes occur.
* The State of Connecticut HUSKY Health offers no cost/low cost health insurance coverage to eligible children, parents, relative caregivers, elders, individuals with disabilities, adults without minor children, and pregnant women. Call 1-800-CT-HUSKY for information and to apply.
