The Southington Board of Education appointed Mr. Connellan as the Superintendent of the Southington Public Schools effective August of 2014. He and his family are long-time residents of Southington and he has been a Superintendent since August of 2005.
Prior to his appointment in Southington, Mr. Connellan was the Superintendent of Schools in Oxford, Connecticut from August 2012 to August 2014. Oxford is a community of approximately 12,000 residents with a school enrollment of 2,500 students. There are two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.
The Bethany Board of Education appointed Mr. Connellan as Superintendent of that district beginning in August of 2005, a position he held until August of 2012. Bethany is an elementary district that feeds into Regional District 5 for middle school and high school. From November 1996 until August 2005, Mr. Connellan was first the Coordinator of Pupil Services and then the Director of Student Services for the North Haven Public Schools. North Haven is a district of approximately 4,000 students. Just prior to working in the North Haven Public Schools, he worked as the Director of Special Services for the South Windsor Public School District with approximately the same in enrollment as North Haven.
During the early part of the 1990’s, Mr. Connellan was the Director of The Committee for Shared Services, a collaborative effort between and among five school districts in northwestern Connecticut providing special education and support services. Prior to that time, he was the Senior Supervising School Psychologist for the Town of West Hartford’s non-public school psychological services department under the Health and Welfare Services program. Mr. Connellan began his career in public schools in 1980 as a School Psychologist in the Southington Public Schools. Mount Saint John, Inc., a therapeutic residential school in Deep River, Connecticut provided Mr. Connellan with his first professional position in 1976.
Mr. Connellan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Boston University, a Master of Science Degree in Counseling and School Psychology as well as a Sixth Year Degree in Counseling and School Psychology, both from Southern Connecticut State University. He holds a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from the University of Connecticut and State Department of Education Professional Educator Certification in School Psychology and Intermediate Administration and Supervision as well as Professional Educator Certification as a Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Connellan has completed more than forty years serving the students and families of Connecticut.
