Attention Parents of 8th Grade Students

The course registration portal opens Thursday, February 16 through February 21, 2023. Please see the attached directions on how to register via the Parent PowerSchool account.  Parents and students are being asked to review level recommendations, select course electives, and submit requests via the portal. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher and/or middle school counselor. It is best to submit during the portal window, and then changes can be made after the 21st with middle school counseling staff, if necessary. Level recommendation questions should be directed to the grade 8 teachers. Directions and registration forms have been attached in case you want to preview the courses offered for each grade level. SHS offers many courses in the various career pathways.*Students are not required to stay in a pathway and more information is included in the directions for registration.

Virtual Course Fair. The 2022 virtual course fair is an integral part of every student’s transition to SHS. This year we will be offering a virtual course fair available through our SHS Youtube channel. Each department has spent a lot of time creating presentations to give each student an idea of what SHS has to offer. 

The course fair will remain available on this channel throughout the spring. Please make sure to visit this link and select our “Southington High School Course Fair Playlist” before choosing your courses for next year!

*IMPORTANT * All parents/guardians of 8th grade students must have access to the Powerschool Parent Portal. This program will need to be accessed from a computer for upcoming Southington High School Course Registration. Please contact Ms. Walsh at (860) 628-3275 if you need Powerschool login information.

Students who do not plan to attend SHS still need to register for courses at SHS.

 

To ALL 8th Grade Families:

Virtual Parent Orientation

All 8th grade parents/guardians are invited to attend Basics 101: An Evening for Middle School Families to Learn About High School. This program will be virtual and held on December 1st with the Southington High School Counselors. We encourage all to attend this very informative presentation. Come and learn about SHS, expectations for students, and the 9th Grade Academy.

 

Agricultural Science Program 

The Ag-Science program offers:

  • Vet Technician
  • Companion Animal Service Industry
  • Landscape Design
  • Floral Design
  • Greenhouse Management
  • Shop Skills
  • Wildlife and Exotic Pets including Aqua Culture and Natural Resources

All 8th graders will see a presentation on Southington High School's Agricultural Science program (November 9). Applications will be available in the School Counseling Office following the presentations. Applications will be due to the School Counseling Office in December. 

 

Project Lead the Way Assembly (PLTW)

All 8th grade students will attend a presentation about PLTW, a high school engineering program at SHS. (November 9)

Level Recommendations- IMPORTANT INFO!!

***All academic teachers will make level recommendations for grade nine during the end of January. Parents and students will have an opportunity to review level recommendations.

We encourage you to speak with or e-mail teachers if you have any level questions. There is a great deal of assessment data that teachers take into consideration when making level recommendations.***

 

Student Life/Activity Fair

All 8th grade students and parents will have an opportunity to explore and learn more about sport programs, activities, and clubs that are offered at *TBD*

 

Grade 9 Orientation at SHS

TBD All Incoming 9th Grade Students are invited to an Orientation at Southington High School. This event will include visits to SHS, schedules will be distributed and tours will be offered. Please contact SHS for more information.
