JUNIOR MONTH-TO-MONTH CALENDAR

August/September

  • Explore career options with the help of Naviance.
  • Obtain dates/places of College Fairs from school counseling office
  • Visit SHS College Fair in September

October

  • Read PSAT/NMSQT Bulletin
  • Take PSAT

November

  • Attend Financial Aid Workshop at SHS
  • Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery test (ASVAB) is available to help determine skills and interests.

December

  • Using PSAT/NMSQT results and materials, begin to orepare for the SAT.
  • Talk with SHS Graduates who are home from college

January

  • Continue career exploration on Naviance and take the Personality Assessment called "Do what you are."
  • Attend College Basics 101 with recent SHS graduates to learn about college life.
  • Practice for SAT on Khan Academy

February

  • Register for challenging senior year courses.
  • Register online for Spring SATs and or ACTs
  • Speak to your counselor & teachers regarding SAT subject tests ( a few schools require SAT subject tests in addition to the SAT).
  • Begin college search using online resources and in person visits (if possible).
  • Investigate enrichment opportunities/summer jobs
  • Practice for SAT on Khan Academy

**Students interested in any Military Academy must begin process in Spring of Junior Year. See Mrs. Miller in Guidance Office for more information.

March

  • Consider taking SAT subject tests in courses that you are currently enrolled in
  • Practice for SAT on Khan Academy

April

  • Create list of potential colleges
  • Begin visiting colleges

May

  • Identify teachers whom you may ask for recommendations
  • AP Exam
  • Take SAT and/or ACT
  • Register for NCAA clearinghouse if you haven’t already (for division I and II college bound athletes) click here for the link

June

  • Take SAT and/or ACT
  • Register online for Fall SAT and/or ACT
  • Continue college search
  • Arrange college visits and/or interviews for summer
  • Practice for SAT on Khan Academy

    3. Work Hard and Learn to Study

II. BASIC STEPS IN CHOOSING A COLLEGE/POST GRADUATE PROGRAM

    1. Establish Selection Criteria…size, location, major, costs, etc.
    2. Look at Selectivity…grades, GPA, standardized tests
    3. Look at College Costs
    4. Develop a list of possible choices…15-20 possible choices
    5. Shorten the list…4-6 colleges (reach, target, safety)
