Urbin T. Kelley School is located on approximately 25 acres in the northwestern section of Southington. The school, built in 1966, has twenty-one classrooms, a library-media center, a cafetorium, art room, music room, speech room, guidance room and gymnasium. There are approximately 370 students. An active parent-teacher organization helps to support the school.
Curriculum is reviewed on a five-year cycle. Instrumental music instruction is available to interested students in grades four and five. An Early Intervention Program to help students succeed is also available. An inclusion model has been successful for our special education students.
Cultural arts events, school/business partnerships, field trips, community activities, the DARE program for fifth graders, fund raisers for non-profit agencies, internet capabilities and participation in the New England Math League competitions are provided to enrich the curricular offerings. Other notable activities include: President's Education Awards, Presidential Physical Fitness Program, Young Author's Program, Northeast Utilities Electric Program, Yankee Gas Safety Program, poster contests, and in-house letter writing "Wee Deliver" program.
Five computers in each classroom allow for integration of technology into the daily curriculum. The school is wired so that all classrooms have internet capabilities.
