About Us

William M. Strong School is located on 21.58 acres in Plantsville, CT.  It was built in 1958 and was recently renovated and expanded. The enrollment increased to 458 students and 64 staff members.  The staff works on implementing the three key elements of the district's Strategic Plan including professional development, instructional consistency, and data utilization.  All staff analyze data that focus on students' performance in the areas of reading comprehension, writing and specific math objectives.  The data guides teacher instruction through grouping, modeling, scaffolding, strategic questioning, and think alouds.  The Early Intervention Program and the Inclusion Model assist teachers in helping students succeed academically and think critically. Each curriculum is renewed on a five-year cycle.  A Gifted Program is available for Grades 4 and 5.  For technology, students research information on the internet and complete Independent Investigative Method Research Projects and PowerPoint presentations.  Staff integrate technology in their program.  Teachers provide differentiation to students with special needs through assignments of varied degrees of difficulty, manipulatives, and a hands-on approach.  The Character Counts Program assists students in understanding the six pillars of character formation and focuses on providing students with a caring classroom environment.  Read Across America is held every year and business people come to read to our students. Each year, our students invite Southington Senior Citizens/Grade Three Grandparents to our school for a breakfast and provide them with entertainment. Teachers and students use the adjacent Panthorn Park for environmental studies.  Students participate in Career Day, D.A.R.E., Arbor Day, Flag Day, Science Fair, Writer of the Week, Student of the Month, Book Buddies, Bowling Club, Ski Club, Fifth Grade Recognition Program,  Presidents' Educational Fitness Award, National Trails' Day, Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Field Day, Strong Cares, School Spirit Days, Book Fairs, etc.  The PTO provides field trips and cultural arts programs and rewards students with a Celebration of Summer Reading to acknowledge the reading of 6,240 books. Strong's Young Authors are celebrated monthly at the  Southington Public Library.  Students wrote over 675 books last year and all writers received awards at the Writers' Celebration with author John Steven Gurney. Strong School continues the school business partnership with Banknorth.

A very active Parent Teacher Organization and School Volunteer Program help support the school by providing students with cultural arts programs, field trips, assistance in the classroom, etc. The parents' time and efforts have contributed immensely to the overall school program.

Strong School provides a safe, secure and comfortable environment where students, staff, and parents work together to continually provide an excellent educational program. Instruction by teachers is motivating, challenging and interesting. Parents through their volunteerism make important contributions to the success of our school. Therefore, Strong School is definitely a very special place for children to grow.
